National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established in 1985 to promote awareness of a disease that represents the most commonly diagnosed cancer of women (excluding basal cell skin cancer). One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.
To counter this toll on women’s health, “research shows that annual mammograms can help detect breast cancers early, when they are most curable, and when it is possible to use breast-conserving therapies,” said Dr. Rand Stack, a diagnostic radiologist at Westmed. “Screening mammography is noninvasive imaging that uses a low-dose X-ray to visualize the breast tissue.” Radiologists examine the mammogram to detect and diagnose breast diseases. Mammography is important, because it is capable of detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage than by any other technique.
“In addition to screening mammography, we have a truly amazing team at Westmed’s Comprehensive Breast Center that encompasses all of breast health care,” said Dr. Adora Fou, Westmed breast surgeon. “We are an NAPBC accredited breast center with radiologists, breast surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists and advanced practice providers who provide an unsurpassed environment of healing and support.” To become accredited by the NAPBC (National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers), a breast center must achieve the highest standards of care.
