Skin Cancer (Mohs) Surgery Reconstruction

Receiving any type of cancer diagnosis can be difficult to accept, and this can be particularly true with skin cancer.  Patients often have no symptoms whatsoever, and then learn that they will require treatment that will lead to potential scarring or disfigurement.  Dr. Suzman understands these concerns and will work with you to guide you through your treatment and optimize your future health and appearance. Depending on the type of skin cancer, treatment can vary.

Basal cell carcinoma is by far the most common type of skin cancer. When found early, there are usually no symptoms aside from a small red mark or wound. Fortunately, basal cell skin cancers rarely spread or metastasize. However, they can be locally aggressive and result in large wounds or destruction of local tissues.  They can be removed directly by a plastic surgeon or in conjunction with a Mohs surgeon. Reconstructing the wound is often challenging, as basal cells occur in sun exposed areas such as the nose, lip, eyelids and face.

Squamous cell carcinomas have a similar appearance to basal cells, but do have a risk of spreading to local lymph nodes if left untreated. Excision is performed similarly to basal cell carcinoma.

Melanoma typically arises in pigmented skin lesions. It can occur anywhere in the body, and typically can be found in areas with less sun exposure. When found early, melanoma is easily curable. When more advanced or deeper, the rate of spread to other parts the body can be quite high. It is for this reason, seeing a dermatologist regularly is important.

Dr. Suzman is skilled in limiting the degree of scarring that can occur with skin cancers. While no treatment can avoid incisions and scars altogether, current plastic surgery techniques allow for orienting the scars in ways that become less visible.

To learn more about the treatment options for skin cancer using plastic surgery, make an appointment to come and see Dr. Suzman, or have your dermatologist coordinate a consultation.
